What Documents Do I Need to Bring for Taxes?

What you need to file your taxes varies depending on your situation. For example, if you’re a self-employed college student, you may need 1099 and 1098-T forms to file your taxes. However, if you weren’t in college and only received a W-2, you could skip those tax documents.

Whether you see a tax professional or prepare your taxes on your own, we’re here to help you determine what documents you need to file your taxes. Check out our different tax organizers below!

How Much Do Tax Preparers Charge?

How much do tax preparers charge? The average fee for preparing a non-itemized Form 1040 individual tax return in 2020 was $220, according to the National Society of Accountants. For an itemized form 1040 for an individual, that fee jumped to $323. Often, tax preparers either charge a minimum fee, plus cost based on the complexity of your return, or they charge a set fee for each form and schedule needed in your return. If you come across a tax preparer whose fee is based on the size of your refund or who says they can get you a bigger refund than the next person, that’s a red flag.

Tax Prepartion Software vs. Tax Professional: Which is Right for You?

The least expensive tax professional will cost at least $100 and a Tax Professional is likely to be double that amount. The upfront savings of using tax software is sometimes a no-brainer as they have free options for basic filers (with income restrictions) to a few hundred dollars more for complicated returns. When you’re preparing your own taxes at home, you can be done the same day, whereas busy tax offices may not get to your return right away. For those who have only a few deductions, sources of income, or investments, there is little need to go to a Tax Professional. (Yes, we said it.) Like a good family doctor, Tax Professionals are in your life for the long haul and are interested in your financial goals. A trusted professional can answer important questions that arise during the year and not just at tax time. There is no straightfoward answer to this question, but those who are comfortable doing their returns, keep doing so. Those who prefer additional help, come on down.
